Church of the Nazarene - Shaped by the Holiness Movement

Nazarene Church LogoI'll admit, as I told Jack Zavada when he began his research into the Church of the Nazarene, I didn't know much at all about this Christian denomination. I've since learned that the Nazarene churches here in the United States took shape through the progression of the Holiness Movement, with John Wesley's doctrine of entire sanctification being the main catalyst behind the development of this Protestant faith.

Out of curiosity, I decided to talk with my friend, Pastor Randy Evans of Grace Christian Fellowship—who happened to be one of my Bible school professors—about his experience of coming to faith in Jesus Christ in the Church of the Nazarene.

"Being raised in a northern Presbyterian Church in the 60s and early 70s," Randy recalled, "I was taught the basics of faith. I had a good 'head knowledge' of what Christ had done for me on the cross, but I was never taught that I could have a 'personal born again' experience with Christ."

At 19, Randy began to attend services with his girlfriend (and future wife) at the Nazarene Church where she grew up. There, he said, "I saw and heard something different. Although certainly not charismatic, the relatively small congregation of 125 people all seemed interested and involved in the worship experience. People clapped their hands, said 'Amen' during the sermon, and wiped tears from their eyes." Read more...

Weekly Prayers & Poems - Prayer for the Work Day

This week's post is a Christian Prayer for the Work Day by Bishop Charles Lewis Slattery (1867-1930). Weekly Prayer PostImage: © Davide Guglielmo Prayer for the Work Day

Almighty God, thank Thee for the job of this day.
May we find gladness in all its toil and difficulty,
its pleasure and success,
and even in its failure and sorrow.
We would look always away from ourselves,
and behold the glory and the need of the world ...

Introduction to the Book of James

Little by little I've been adding introductions to each book of the Bible to the site. Since my progress has been slow, I'm thrilled now to have contributing writer Jack Zavada join me on this mission. We look forward to completing all 66 books. The reason we're providing this resource is to help you better understand God's purpose and plan of salvation in each book of the Bible, and assist you in gaining a more complete and unified perspective on the entire Bible.

Because it's a compact, practical guide on how to be a Christian, the book of James is a great book to study, especially as a new believer.

This Week's Testimony: Noah's Living Water

Noah had spent his life living for self. Although he did everything he could imagine to feel good, nothing brought true satisfaction. After losing his girlfriend and the family they had formed, Noah reached his lowest point. Alone in church, God confronted his selfishness and offered him a taste of living water. That day, the Lord completely quenched Noah's spiritual thirst, and gave him peace and a purpose for living.

Noah's Living Water is one of our many featured testimonies from you, the members and visitors of this site. Each story reveals a life transformed by Christian faith. If your relationship with God has made a significant difference in your life, we would like to hear about it.

A Shocking Encounter With Jesus

Woman at the WellIn the Bible account of the Woman at the Well, we discover a story of God's loving acceptance. Breaking several Jewish customs, Jesus shocked the Samaritan woman. When he offered her living water so that she'd never thirst again, Jesus changed this woman's life forever. Through the encounter, Jesus also revealed that his mission was to the entire world, and not just the Jews.

This study highlights a few interesting points from the story, such as why the Samaritan woman went to draw water at the hottest, most inconvenient time of the day. At noon, the woman knew no other females from town would be at the well. Because of her immoral life, she was an outcast. She would not have gone to fetch water at the same time as the other women because she didn't want to endure their humiliation and rejection. Jesus, knowing the woman's sordid history, still accepted her with love and compassion.

Weekly Prayers & Poems - Eternity in Hell

If you died today, would you be ready for eternity? This week's member-submitted poem called Eternity in Hell, will make you stop and consider that all-important question. Weekly Prayer PostImage: © Davide Guglielmo

Eternity in Hell

I had died and my soul was brought before God
To be judged for the journey that I had trod.

The terrible truth about my life had finally hit
Concerning my journey and how my life was spent.

The Ten Commandments appeared before me, one and all
I was asked one by one, how I'd obeyed their beckoning call.

The answers terrified me to my core
There was nothing hidden, standing on God's floor.

I was asked one by one about the deeds I had done
Did I obey God's rules and law, or did I forsake them one and all.

Got Fruit?

Fruit is a metaphor used frequently throughout the Bible. It is used to describe the people to whom we evangelize, and it also used to describe spiritual qualities we strive to have. There are nine fruits of the spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Each of these traits are ones that come naturally to some and require work for others.

Most of us know the fruits of the spirit that come easy to us. If not, there are questionnaires and quizzes to help us figure it out. However, bible studies and prayer can help us change our attitudes and habits to receive the fruits of the spirit so that we grow in the way God asks of us.

Sunday Scripture: Galatians 6:9

Galatians 6:9 - "So let's not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don't give up." (NLT)

It is not always easy being a Christian, and sometimes we just feel like giving up. However, we cannot let discouragement get the best of us. Sure, the easy way out may seem like a great idea, but sometimes we have to go through the more difficult path to reap more than one reward. It may not sound glamorous, but the lessons we learn from the long and difficult path are often far more priceless than those we reap quickly.

So, if you feel like giving up and feel buried under bad feelings, it can help to ask God to show you even a small glimmer of hope. Galatians 6:9 is a scripture to keep close to your heart for just these times.

Moving Too Fast for Your Own Good

No, the title of this blog post isn't talking about driving (though I do think most of us could be better about slowing down in that regard, too). I'm talking about moving fast in relationships. There are varying Christian opinions about how far is too far, with most of us agreeing that premarital sex is pretty much too far, but until we realize how we get there, it becomes pretty hard to not keep giving in until we just can't turn back.

There are so many things that can tempt us down the wrong path. We face peer pressure, and today sex doesn't carry the same taboos it once did. Yet the Bible gives us good advice for overcoming temptations. If we look to the Word, we can find our strength and answers. It's what we do with that strength and how we use those answers that can keep us from going to place in our lives we may regret.

Sunday Scripture: 1 Peter 3:3-4

1 Peter 3:3-4 - "Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes. Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight." (NIV)

With the Emmy Awards coming up tonight, there is going to be a lot of talk over the next few days about what people were wearing. Just as much as people will be awarded for their talent, probably just as much discussion will take place about fashion. And while the discussion is in good fun, people's outward appearance tends to take on just a little too much emphasis.

Sure, God wants us to take care of ourselves. We shouldn't walk around looking slovenly or sloppy. Yet, we should put far more emphasis on what's going on inside ourselves and our relationship with God than the clothes we wear to school or work. There is a reason for the statement, "beauty is fleeting." Inner beauty never fades, and no matter how pretty someone is on the outside, an ugly inside always shows.

What Makes You a Christian?

We often have discussions about how our faith is different from Judaism, Islam, or Buddhism. Yet, a recent article in USA Today points out that there is even disagreement among Christians about who is a Christian and who isn't. Denominations cannot seem to agree on the "rules" of Christianity, so how do we know if we are actually Christians?

Cathy Grossman's article points out that 95% of Americans reportedly believe in God. Yet, not that many Americans identify 100% with their respective denominations. So, is it possible that we could all agree on what makes us true believers? Protestants don't agree with Catholics. Baptists disagree with Anglicans. The list of disagreements on specific fundamentals goes on and on...

So how do you deal with the differences? Does one denomination not agreeing with your denomination make you feel "less Christian?" Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Sunday Scripture: Luke 6:35-36

Luke 6:35-36 - "But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful." (NIV)

If we want to walk in Jesus' shoes, then we need to learn to love the unloveable. It's easy to love those closest to you, but it's harder to love those that make your life difficult. Jesus often had difficulties with things people were doing, especially with people like the Pharisees, but that does not mean He would not show them mercy. Even on the cross, Jesus asked for God to forgive those who crucified Him.

Yes, Jesus is Lord, making Him remarkable, but that doesn't mean we don't strive to be like that. We need to think through our own actions. We need to remember that those who seek to hurt us may have been hurt themselves. We also need to remember that God loves them, too. I'm not saying it's easy to show them kindness...Luke doesn't say it's easy. However, loving our enemies is something we need to work toward.

Creating a Good Password Keeps Your Info Safer

Sure, we all like to use our favorite Bible verse, pet, etc. for a password, but when it comes to internet security, experts are now saying longer is better. In fact, they are now recommending 12 character passwords, because it was estimated that it would take 17,134 years for them to be broken.

Passwords, though, are really just one of many things to consider when it comes to be safe online. Anyone who has had their e-mail hacked or social networking profile stolen knows that a good password is just the beginning. We also need to avoid putting up too much personal information, and we need to make sure we don't "friend" people we don't know.

As Christians, we are no less immune to the hazards of this world, especially when we are careless. We may ask God to protect us, but God also gave us tools to help keep us safe. We need to use them.
