Google Earth Reveals the Devastation in Haiti

Google responded to the devastating earthquake that hit Haiti earlier this week by working with satellite imagery company GeoEye to quickly make images of the destruction available in Google Earth and Google Maps. The images were taken at approximately 10:27 a.m. Eastern time on Wednesday, and could prove to be a helpful tool for aid organizations attempting to survey and assess the damage to Haiti's infrastructure.

(Click on any of the images in the story to see a larger version; all show satellite images of areas in Haiti before and after the earthquake hit.)

Google Begins Replying to More Nexus One Complaints

Google appears to be trying to boost its customer support for Nexus One customers, posting replies to many more queries on its online forum.

Google has come under fire since the launch of the Nexus One after hundreds of messages were posted with complaints or questions about the phone. Many customers said that after calling T-Mobile they were referred to HTC, the phone's maker, or the reverse. Google does not have a customer-service phone line, and customers sending e-mails were being told to wait one or two days for a reply.

PC Shipments Jump in the Fourth Quarter, IDC Says

Worldwide PC shipments soared during the fourth quarter, driven by historically low PC prices and an increased demand for laptops and netbooks, analyst firm IDC said Wednesday.

Shipments totaled 85.8 million units during the fourth quarter of 2009, growing 15.2 percent compared to the fourth quarter of 2008. The unexpected growth signals a possible end to the struggles the PC industry has gone through during the recession, IDC said in a statement.

Wow, Did That Go on Sale? Famous Tech Vaporware

Each year, the nation's largest geekfest, the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), is full of hype, overhype, and beyond the valley of the hype. Remember the Internet Refrigerator?

And each year the hype (and overhype, and b.t.v.o.t. hype) inevitably leads to disappointment: Vendors dangle many alluring prototypes and product rumors in front of the assembled tech journalists and geeks during the week in Las Vegas, but many of the products never appear or arrive far later than scheduled and in a competely different format. Evidently, much of what is dangled in Vegas stays in Vegas.

Some Barnes & Noble Nook Buyers Get $100 Voucher

Barnes & Noble is giving $100 gift certificates to Nook e-reader buyers who placed orders for the devices to be delivered before the holidays and now won't receive them until after the Christmas. The company had hoped that most preorders from November would be delivered by December 24, but says that some won't arrive on time.

Unveiled in late October, the Barnes & Noble Nook has seen several delays and is already out of stock across the country. The $259 e-book reader is the main competitor to Amazon's Kindle device, and it has received mixed reviews due to several software slowdowns.

Do You Choose the 32-bit Driver or the 64-bit One?

Have you ever been looking for a simple driver or software program to download but froze on the choice of a 32-bit version or a 64-bit version?

If you weren't sure, 32-bit was probably the safe choice. Most users with 64-bit computers are pretty aware of this fact. However, this is something you should know for sure about your PC:

Am I Running a 32-bit or 64-bit Operating System?

External DVD-ROM Won't Playback

From MJM13 in the PC Support Forum:

...music CDs will play but movie DVDs will not. I have downloaded VLC and GOM media players, I have updated drivers and registry - I even upgraded from Windows 7 Starter to Home Premium. This seem, from other forums, to be a Windows 7 problem, but I can't figure out how to get the media players to recognize the DVD disc. If I open CD ROM under devices, it says "insert disc in D drive" even though a disc is inserted. Again, CDs, no problem. PLEASE HELP!

Thoughts for MJM13?

With a base price of just $499, the build to order Systemax Venture H422i is certainly very affordable. The system is also quite slim for a computer system that uses a traditional desktop processors. Most people looking for a small desktop PC will likely want to upgrade the system beyond the base setup. Will the cost of upgrading the slim desktop make it too expensive for the performance and features offered? Find out in my review of the Sytemax Venture H422i desktop.

Shuttle's High Performance Cube PC

Shuttle is a name synonymous with small form factor computers. Their XPC barebones systems created the market for high performance compact systems. In addition to selling the barebones kits, they also sell systems for those that would prefer to not put the system together themselves. They certainly have some high performance systems but are they worth the price Shuttle is charging? Find out in my review of the Shuttle XPC H7 5800 desktop.

Polywell's Featured Packed MiniBox PC

Small form factor PCs are generally limited in their features due to the space constraints of their cases. Polywell doesn't seem to be faced with this problem in their MiniBox systems that they have stuffed with a wide range of features that most small PCs would envy. They even include items such as a monitor and speakers that most companies don't include with their systems. Do all these features make the system less portable and affordable? Find out in my review of the Polywell MiniBox P5500C desktop.

HP decided to make a major change to their Pavilion Slimline desktops with their latest revision. Rather than using the Intel processor platform, they have switched over to using the AMD Phenom II. It still retains much of the media and networking features that set it apart from the competition. Does the processor change impact the overall performance of this media oriented small desktop system? Find out in my review of the HP Pavilion Slimline s5360f slim desktop.

Computer Deal of the Week

While a lot of new netbooks have been released with the new Intel Atom platform, their performance isn't really all that different from previous models. If you are looking at getting a netbook and aren't concerned with extremely long running times, Best Buy has the ASUS Eee PC 1005HA netbook for just $250. It comes equipped with an Intel Atom N270, 1GB DDR2 memory, 160GB hard drive, 10.1" LED backlit display, 802.11b/g/n wireless and Windows XP Home operating system. As mentioned before, the battery life is relatively short for a netbook because it uses a smaller 3-cell battery pack.

WD Debuts My Passport AV Drives For Use With Sony Handycams

Western Digital unveiled its May Passport AV portable media drives, which it says are designed specifically for video storage and playback. The drives are meant to operate "seamlessly" with the Direct Copy feature on Sony's Handycams. Basically, you can skip the step of downloading the content to your computer first and put it directly from the camcorder to the drive. This is a pretty cool, especially if you tend to record a lot of videos when you're traveling - now you can just bring your camcorder and the drive.

As an added bonus, you can simply plug the drive into your TV, Xbox 360 or Blu-ray player to watch the content your just recorded. The only caveat (and a pretty big one) is that the TV or player must be compatible. You can find a list of compatible devices here.

I must admit I am puzzled that the drive is offered in a 320GB capacity -- video files are notorious data guzzlers, and I would think that a "video specific" drive would come in at least a 500GB version, if not a 1TB.

Price is $109.
