Google Earth Reveals the Devastation in Haiti

Google responded to the devastating earthquake that hit Haiti earlier this week by working with satellite imagery company GeoEye to quickly make images of the destruction available in Google Earth and Google Maps. The images were taken at approximately 10:27 a.m. Eastern time on Wednesday, and could prove to be a helpful tool for aid organizations attempting to survey and assess the damage to Haiti's infrastructure.

(Click on any of the images in the story to see a larger version; all show satellite images of areas in Haiti before and after the earthquake hit.)

Google Begins Replying to More Nexus One Complaints

Google appears to be trying to boost its customer support for Nexus One customers, posting replies to many more queries on its online forum.

Google has come under fire since the launch of the Nexus One after hundreds of messages were posted with complaints or questions about the phone. Many customers said that after calling T-Mobile they were referred to HTC, the phone's maker, or the reverse. Google does not have a customer-service phone line, and customers sending e-mails were being told to wait one or two days for a reply.

PC Shipments Jump in the Fourth Quarter, IDC Says

Worldwide PC shipments soared during the fourth quarter, driven by historically low PC prices and an increased demand for laptops and netbooks, analyst firm IDC said Wednesday.

Shipments totaled 85.8 million units during the fourth quarter of 2009, growing 15.2 percent compared to the fourth quarter of 2008. The unexpected growth signals a possible end to the struggles the PC industry has gone through during the recession, IDC said in a statement.

Wow, Did That Go on Sale? Famous Tech Vaporware

Each year, the nation's largest geekfest, the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), is full of hype, overhype, and beyond the valley of the hype. Remember the Internet Refrigerator?

And each year the hype (and overhype, and b.t.v.o.t. hype) inevitably leads to disappointment: Vendors dangle many alluring prototypes and product rumors in front of the assembled tech journalists and geeks during the week in Las Vegas, but many of the products never appear or arrive far later than scheduled and in a competely different format. Evidently, much of what is dangled in Vegas stays in Vegas.

Some Barnes & Noble Nook Buyers Get $100 Voucher

Barnes & Noble is giving $100 gift certificates to Nook e-reader buyers who placed orders for the devices to be delivered before the holidays and now won't receive them until after the Christmas. The company had hoped that most preorders from November would be delivered by December 24, but says that some won't arrive on time.

Unveiled in late October, the Barnes & Noble Nook has seen several delays and is already out of stock across the country. The $259 e-book reader is the main competitor to Amazon's Kindle device, and it has received mixed reviews due to several software slowdowns.

Changing Your Password Won't Kill You

I am constantly amazed at the resistance of so many of my clients and readers to change their Windows passwords.

"They MAKE me do it every 30 days at work! I'm not doing it at home too."
"I don't know how."
"I forget where that stuff is."
"Why would I want to change it? 12345 is so easy to remember!"

I think everyone is aware that changing your Windows password regularly is important to maintain a certain level of security for your computer.

What surprises me more is the excuse that it's too hard to do or the options are too hard to find. They're not. Changing a Windows password is one of the easier things you can do in Windows:

Do You Choose the 32-bit Driver or the 64-bit One?

Have you ever been looking for a simple driver or software program to download but froze on the choice of a 32-bit version or a 64-bit version?

If you weren't sure, 32-bit was probably the safe choice. Most users with 64-bit computers are pretty aware of this fact. However, this is something you should know for sure about your PC:

Am I Running a 32-bit or 64-bit Operating System?

External DVD-ROM Won't Playback

From MJM13 in the PC Support Forum:

...music CDs will play but movie DVDs will not. I have downloaded VLC and GOM media players, I have updated drivers and registry - I even upgraded from Windows 7 Starter to Home Premium. This seem, from other forums, to be a Windows 7 problem, but I can't figure out how to get the media players to recognize the DVD disc. If I open CD ROM under devices, it says "insert disc in D drive" even though a disc is inserted. Again, CDs, no problem. PLEASE HELP!

Thoughts for MJM13?

HP's Luxury Ultraportable Laptop

At first glance, the HP Envy 13 looks very similar to the Apple MacBook Pro 13. While the outward appearance may be close between the two, there are some distinct differences both internally and with the price tags. This is certainly not HP's more mainstream laptop and is targeted towards a luxury market. Does HP managed to succeed at producing a high quality and high performing ultraportable laptop? Find out in my review of the HP Envy 13 laptop.

Gateway's All-day 11.6-inch Ultraportable

Netbooks are extremely popular for their compact size and long running times. The big problem with them though is their lack of performance making them more suitable as secondary computers to supplement a more powerful laptop or desktop. Gateway has built their EC series of laptops as a compact alternative that provides a more powerful computing experience with similar long running times. Can it really achieve these goals while keeping the price affordable? Find out in my review of the Gateway EC1815u ultraportable.

Dell's Affordable Adamo Ultraportable

Back in 2009, Dell introduced their MacBook Air killer ultrathin laptop the Dell Adamo XPS. It was packed with high performance features and state of the art technology. It also came with a very high price tag that rivaled the MacBook Air. Eventually, Dell came to their senses and decided to design a new revision of the Adamo that would offer a similar level of portability but at a much more affordable price tag. Does this lower cost Adamo laptop still provide a high quality ultrathin laptop or did they cut the quality too much? Find out in my review of the Dell Adamo Admire Onyx ultraportable laptop.

Dual Core CULV 13-inch Ultraportable From ASUS

ASUS released the UL30A-X1 last year as their first Intel consumer ultra-low voltage laptops. The system had a very long running time with a reasonable $700 price tag. They have since upgraded their long lasting ultrapotable system to use a dual-core processor instead of the single core model. This typically results in a shorter overall running time but does it have a big impact? Find out in my review of the ASUS UL30A-A2 ultraportable laptop.

Computer Deal of the Week

Blu-ray is finally becoming popular among home theater owners thanks to the decreasing costs of players and movies. Microsoft Adds LifeCams With "TrueColor Technology"

Microsoft announced three new webcams in its LifeCam line this week. All of the new cameras have what Microsoft has termed "TrueColor Technology." This is supposed to help with dimly lit conditions, which can obviously hamper a good webcam experience. (And, as HP can tell you, can be a true PR nightmare in some cases.)

The new models are the HD-5000, HD-5001 and HD-6000. The first two have the same specs (720p HD widescreen, auto focus, $49.95 price tag) but different designs, while the third has those specs and adds 360-degree rotation view. It carries a $59.95 price tag.

The 5000 and 5001 are supposed to be available this month, and the 6000 is scheduled for May.

Your Germs Will Rat You Out

It's not only bagel and potato chip crumbs you're leaving on your computer keyboards, according to a story reported by Reuters. "Trails" of germs are left behind by people, researchers from the University of Colorado at Boulder said, and these germs might be able to help solve crimes.

No word on what happens if you use washable keyboards like the one Kensington has.

WD Debuts My Passport AV Drives For Use With Sony Handycams

Western Digital unveiled its May Passport AV portable media drives, which it says are designed specifically for video storage and playback. The drives are meant to operate "seamlessly" with the Direct Copy feature on Sony's Handycams. Basically, you can skip the step of downloading the content to your computer first and put it directly from the camcorder to the drive. This is a pretty cool, especially if you tend to record a lot of videos when you're traveling - now you can just bring your camcorder and the drive.

As an added bonus, you can simply plug the drive into your TV, Xbox 360 or Blu-ray player to watch the content your just recorded. The only caveat (and a pretty big one) is that the TV or player must be compatible. You can find a list of compatible devices here.

I must admit I am puzzled that the drive is offered in a 320GB capacity -- video files are notorious data guzzlers, and I would think that a "video specific" drive would come in at least a 500GB version, if not a 1TB.

Price is $109.
