After Dark Originals, the outgrowth of the After Dark Horrorfest featuring in-house productions by After Dark Films, is returning for a second go-round. Interestingly, Re-Kill, the eighth and final entry in the 2011 After Dark Originals still has yet to receive a release date, so you may very well see the first 2012 film -- Dark Circles -- before you see the last 2011 film. Dark Circles, starring Johnathan Schaech and Pell James as a couple
Dark Circles is written and directed by Paul Soter, a member of the Broken Lizard comedy troupe whose only brush with horror has been the underwhelming slasher send-up Club Dread.

If you haven't realized it from films like The Devil Inside, The Last Exorcism, Apollo 18, Cloverfield, Quarantine and Chronicle, "found footage" is the hot thing in Hollywood. Now, Oren Peli, who triggered the recent explosion with Paranormal Activity, is bringing the format to TV with The River, the story of a rescue mission searching for a missing explorer in the Amazon that presumably uncovers some freaky supernatural stuff. The first two episodes, which air back-to-back on ABC on Tuesday, February 7, at 9:00 PM ET/PT, were directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, whose horror pedigree includes House of Wax and Orphan.

Exceeding all expectations, the Daniel Radcliffe ghost story The Woman in Black pulled in an estimated $21 million in its opening weekend, losing out on first place to Chronicle by only about $1 million. According to Box Office Mojo, it was the first time two movies opening on Super Bowl weekend exceeded $20 million. More important to genre fans, this continues the string of strong horror box office debuts, hopefully reaffirming studios' commitment to fright films following a string of underperforming horror flicks in the latter half of 2011.

Daniel Radcliffe's first post-Harry Potter movie role comes in another book adaptation: The Woman in Black, based on the 1983 Susan Hill novel about a vengeful female ghost terrorizing a small British town. Too bad he doesn't have a magic wand to help him. Read about it in my review of The Woman in Black.

Business-wise, it shouldn't come as a surprise that a sequel to the 2011 hit Insidious is in the works, given it was one of the top-grossing horror movies of the year despite a budget of only $1.5 million. Creatively, Insidious 2 might be a bit more problematic; even though the original film ended on something of a cliffhanger, it might be difficult to recreate the scary magic for a second go 'round. That said, at least the sequel is in the right hands: Leigh Whannell is back on board as writer, and it's expected that his longtime partner James Wan will return to direct. Production will begin later this year, with a 2013 release expected. So, what do you think? Where do you see the story going?

From the director of the Grudge movies (both Japanese and American) and the writer of The Uninvited comes 7500, another ghost movie -- this time, on a plane. Actually, it's not clear from the first trailer whether or not the entity on Vista Pacific Flight 7500 is indeed a ghost, but it's clear there's something supernatural onboard wreaking havoc. ...

It seems that the Bloody Disgusting Selects series might have abandoned its initial plan of showing indie horror movies in select AMC Theaters locations. After sending six films to the big screen in 2001, its December release, Chop, went straight to DVD, and now comes word that the series' next two entries will likewise head directly to home video. Those two are Outcast (February 21), a British film about a mother and son on the run from a mysterious man, and The Pack (March 6), a French film about a kidnapped woman who finds herself on the menu for a group of hideous creatures. Although the cinematic experience is nice, I'm just glad the series is still going strong, and I hope it continues to release quality genre movies -- regardless of where they play.

Hitting theaters in limited release this week, The Innkeepers attempts to follow in the footsteps of fellow haunted hotel movies The Shining and 1408 -- without all the Stephen King-ness. How does it stack up? Read about it in my review The Innkeepers.
