There are all sorts of crazy schemes that supposedly help dieters lose weight fast; however, according to at least one expert, the best way to get quick results is to eat more frequently.
Paula A. Achoa, a health and fitness expert who writes instructionals focused on how to lose weight, says the right foods can boost metabolism and speed fat loss.
“Crash diets send the brain into starvation mode, which actually encourages the body to hang on to fat,” he said. “On the other hand, when you eat several meals throughout the day, your metabolism tends to speed up, which ultimately encourages fat loss.”
Achoa says dieters should focus on eating small meals every two to two-and-a-half hours; however, he points to specific types of foods that aid weight loss.
“For best results, dieters should eat foods high in fiber and protein,” he said. “These foods take longer to digest, which helps keep insulin levels steady.”
Achoa says big spikes in insulin have proved to spur fat development. According to him, because fiber takes longer to digest, it keeps insulin levels from spiking and also promotes fullness.
“Fiber helps dieters lose weight fast by curbing their appetite and regulating blood sugar levels,” he said. “High-fiber foods also tend to be naturally low in calories, which helps to create a caloric deficit, the end goal of any dieting plan.”
Achoa recommends high-fiber foods, such as cauliflower, cucumbers, leafy greens and whole grain cereals, which tend to sustain dieters for longer periods of time.
“I advise against sugary and starchy foods, which tend to cause the body to store fat,” he said. “Though nutritious, fruit probably shouldn’t be a big part of a dieter’s menu, especially if he or she is hoping to lose weight quickly.”
